WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A DHI HAIR TRANSPLANT

Part 6 of an Info Series on Hair Transplants

Like any medical procedure, hair transplant surgery can be a big step towards greater confidence.

The procedure itself has evolved to painless microsurgery in just a few hours, and having a clear idea of how the process works can go a long way in assuring you that it’s an investment worth making.

We’ve written this guide to help you better understand how hair transplant surgery works–or at least, how it works here at DHI Philippines.

Step One: Hair Loss Consultation

Step One: Hair Loss Consultation

Before any surgery can happen, it’s important to be a medical professional; anyone can tell you that you’re losing hair, but you should trust a doctor to tell you how to fix it.

A consultation for hair loss normally takes place at a dedicated clinic. When you come in for a consultation, expect to have a chat with a specialist to determine the cause and extent of your hair loss. If you qualify for a hair transplant, you can also expect to hear a price estimate.

Here’s a summary: You qualify for a hair transplant if:

You suffer from androgenic alopecia

Consultations at DHI Philippines come with a few notable differences from other clinics in the country. For instance, you can consult with us online if you don’t have the time to visit our clinic for an assessment (this is a popular option among our patients from other countries).

Our diagnostic process is also one of a kind. Developed by our parent organization, The DHI Global Medical Group, the Unique Diagnostic System for Alopecia (UDSA) takes four factors into consideration: psychology, mathematics, medicine, and artistry. The end result is a medical procedure undertaken by a trained surgeon, using artistic elements to produce a natural finish.

The consultation will feel more like a conversation over a cup of coffee, but it’s a comprehensive type of assessment helps us design a unique treatment plan and map the outcomes of your procedure before it takes place.

Step Two: The Hair Transplant Procedure

What happens during a hair transplant varies across the different kinds of procedures, so we’ll stick to our specialization for the purposes of this article.

Our trademark procedure, Direct Hair Implantation, involves three phases: extraction, sorting, and placement.

Extraction

Extraction

We begin the procedure with the extraction phase.

The hairs that are used for your transplant procedure come from donor areas on your scalp –normally the back and sides of the head. These hairs are genetically guaranteed never to fall as they don’t carry a sensitivity to the dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

At DHI Philippines, the extraction process comes with minimal trauma to the donor area. We use patented tools with a diameter of under 1mm to retrieve follicular units using local anaesthetic. This makes it painless and precise, as an advanced treatment should be.

While this mode of extraction might seem like common sense, note that other common procedures still remove entire portions of the scalp (ex. FUT and hair plugs) and either reinsert them or cut them apart to retrieve individual follicles.

Sorting

When Do You Qualify for Hair Transplant Surgery

The period of time between extraction and placement is critical to the success of a transplant.

Your grafts are sorted according to the number of hairs they carry for two reasons. First, they’re sorted and counted so we can say we achieved the target volume of hairs for the session.

Secondly, they’re sorted to ensure that each implanted graft carries the right density for a natural result during the placement phase.

It’s vital that strict protocols be followed when handling follicular grafts. Anything short of precise and proper handling can lead to damaged or contaminated grafts being implanted back into the scalp.

For this reason, we preserve grafts with the same solution used in organ transplants instead of the more commonly used saline solution. This premium material keeps the grafts alive and contributes greatly to our 97% success rate much higher than the industry average of 50-70%.

Placement

Placement

The third phase of the session is possibly where technique and artistry matters most.

For FUE , small incisions (pre-holes) are made prior to implantation. Like a farmer would till soil, other clinics cut the scalp and place grafts into the waiting holes. This technique is what causes the tell-tale bumps and scars among transplant recipients, and it leads to odd, uneven growth patterns for implanted hair.

DHI opts for a more precise approach. By using a tool patented by DHI and now used exclusively within our clinics, we implant grafts directly into your scalp with full control over the angle and depth of placement. This lets our specialists implant grafts in a way that follows the natural growth patterns of your hair for a result that is indistinguishable from the native hair.

As you undergo the placement phase, you’re free to nap, read, or catch a movie –the procedure is really that comfortable.

Step Three: Recovering from a Hair Transplant

Recovering from a Hair Transplant

For the first three days:

Newly transplanted hairs will be fragile as your scalp heals around the grafts.

Wear clothes that you won’t need to pull over your head (ex. button-up shirts, jumpers).

When you return to work depends on your level of comfort, and the pollutants you may be exposed to over the course of your work day. As a general rule of thumb, you should be perfectly fine returning to work after 5-7 days.

Expect us call you in for a check-up after three months have passed since your procedure, and again every three months until it’s been a year since your transplant. At DHI we are so confident in the technology and skill invested in the procedure, that we guarantee results.

Conclusion: Natural Results for a Lifetime

A good hair transplant is permanent and transformative. It’s an investment that lasts a lifetime, comes with minimal inconvenience, and charges a reasonable cost.

If you’re curious about what a hair transplant entails, or are on the fence about getting one yourself, we hope this article helped clarify the process.

Hair loss is and should be a temporary inconvenience, so now that you know more about the procedure, feel free to contact us for an appointment. You’ll be happy you did.
